5 Expert Tips for Boosting Confidence in Front of the Camera

As a professional photographer, one question I'm often asked is how to look confident in front of the camera. It's easy to notice when someone appears uncomfortable or unsure in photographs, as their body language can come across as guarded and tense, resulting in that "deer in the headlights" look.

I can empathize with my clients because I've experienced that awkwardness myself—feeling uncertain about what to do with my face, hands, and body while being photographed. It can be overwhelming.

If you run a business and need to present yourself on social media as the face behind your brand. It’s important that you show up as an expert in your field.

I've compiled my top five tips for looking and feeling confident in front of the camera. These tips are applicable even if you're not a trained model. Your photographer should guide you during a professional photo shoot, but you can also practice on your own or with a friend to help you feel more self-assured when not working with a professional.

1. Discover Your Best Side

Every individual has a preferred angle or side of their face to be photographed from. To find yours, stand in front of a full-length mirror and use your phone to capture your face from various angles. Once you've identified your best side, you can start to practice how to pose effectively.

2. Collect Inspirational Images

Create a Pinterest board of images that inspire you and align with your brand and personality. Try mimicking these poses in front of a mirror, even though it may feel awkward initially. With practice, you'll gain a better understanding of what works best for you and your brand, empowering you for your next photo opportunity.

3. Focus on the Eyes

They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul, making direct eye contact with the camera and slightly narrowing the lower lids of your eyes can make you appear more confident. Experiment with this technique in front of a mirror to perfect it.

4. Extend Your Neck

Camera lenses can sometimes add unwanted weight due to compression. To avoid the appearance of a thick neck and chin, extend your neck. Imagine a string attached to the centre of your forehead being gently pulled upward. This movement will create space between your head and neck, resulting in a better-defined jawline and a more confident appearance.

5. Relax and Loosen Up

Tension is often visible in photographs, so it's crucial to relax before the shoot. Play some music, shake out your shoulders, arms, and hands to loosen up. You might even have a little dance to boost your energy and help you feel comfortable and relaxed in your body. Remember, it's not like going to the dentist; it can be an enjoyable experience!

By following these tips, you can enhance your confidence in front of the camera, whether it's for personal or professional use. Practice makes perfect, and with time, you'll become more photogenic and self-assured in your photos.

Enjoy your time in front of the camera, and remember, looking confident is mainly about feeling confident!
